Victory is special in its own right for Bill

Bill Williams rolled back the years by joining Maidstone players in a dressing-room conga, writes Craig Tucker. United’s 72-year-old chief executive has seen everything in his time in football. And the moment Frannie Collin’s 87thminute header beat Stevenage is right up there. Mr Williams said: “It’s the first time I’ve done the conga in about 20 years! Everyone’s delighted. “Before the game it looked like Stevenage were favourites and we were hoping to nick a 1-0. “We got in front but at 1-1 I thought they were on top in terms of possession and then we had that wonderful goal from Frannie Collin. “Frannie’s been a little offsong lately but he’s come up with two goals for us and the place has erupted. “It’s such good news for everybody – the owners who put their money in, the players who put their hearts into it and the management and fans. “For me, being an old football man, it’s like being in heaven.” Maidstone have had their fair share of memorable FA Cup moments down the years, from beating Gillingham after two replays in 1980 to taking on John Barnes’ top-flight Watford in 1987. Mr Williams added: “When you beat Gillingham, when you take Charlton to a replay, when you go to Sheffield United and nearly win and when you go to Watford and beat Exeter, they have their own little moment. “But for me personally and the regime that’s at the club now, it’s a special moment because we didn’t expect it to happen so soon. “Now if only we could move up a level and have this sort of atmopshere every week it could be a wonderful future for the club. “It’s difficult to compare this team with sides of the past. “I had a Maidstone team that had seven non-league internationals in it and there were some great players but, as a team, this is good. “It can most probably go up to the next level.”
