Everyone is invited to join in and be part of the traditional Christmas light switch on which is being held at the village hall on Sunday, December 7. Lights on at 6pm, and then down to the hall for some mulled wine and mince pies. It is hoped to have some carol singing too, so get those voices in training. There will be a charity collection for The Macmillan Cancer Trust. If you can attend that would be great. If you can donate some mulled wine and mince pies even better. Any offers of either contact Mimi on 843592. Family Service: There will be a service of Family Worship at All Saints’ Church on Sunday December 7 at 10.45am. Coffee will be served from 10.30am. Afternoon concert: The Kent Police Male Voice Choir present a concert of seasonal and non-seasonal choral music on Sunday, December 7 at 3pm in church. This is an afternoon concert so an excellent opportunity for a family outing. Tickets available on the door: Adults £10 to include programme children/full time students £5. Information from 01622 813032 Village magazine advertising: Rostrum, the village’s free magazine, is arranging its advertising for 2015. All current advertisers and those who have expressed an interest in advertising should have been contacted. Anyone else characters and elements will be there – the principal boy, the dame, the villain, cross-dressing and audience participation. The actors are working hard to refine the acting skills so familiar to loyal audiences from past productions as well as polishing their singing and dancing techniques. They could do with a bit more help so if you have practical skills and some spare time to help with set building or other backstage duties, they would love to hear from you. They also need one or two more people for the chorus – no acting ability is required (for any of it really). If you could spare them some time, call Mimi Humphrey on 843592. Local guided walk: The next local footpaths walk, led by Kevin Reynolds, sets off from the village hall car park sharp at 2pm on Sunday December 7. All welcome including dogs on leads. Well done: The village school raised more than £500 for Children in Need with a day of challenges. Classes set themselves a goal – everything from spending the day three-legged; in silence or completing a physical challenge. Children chose challenges for the teachers which saw them eating lemons and lime; bobbing for apples; dancing like a penguin or hula-hooping and cartwheeling. Congratulations in raising funds for others in such fun ways. No doubt the children will love hearing the story of Christmas, sharing some Christmas music, doing some crafts and enjoying their refreshments. The new year starts for Little Fishes on Monday January 12. Call Jane on 01622 817080 or Daphne on 817388 for details. Christmas entertainment: At the monthly WI meeting on Tuesday December 9 at 7.30pm at the village hall, members, including those from other WIs in the district, will be enjoying their Christmas entertainment... and what entertainment! We can only imagine the hilarity at their short play entitled Grumpy Old Fairies. There will also be secret Santa and the group’s own version of The Twelve Days of Christmas. There will be wine or a cuppa and a mince pie or sausage roll. Baptist service: The next service at the Baptist Church takes place on Sunday December 7. This will be morning service at 10.30am, with Holy Communion and Treasure Seekers Sunday School. Seniors’ crime prevention: An informal meeting hosted by PCSO Nicola Morris at the village hall last week addressed the subject of crime prevention for seniors. The meeting was well attended and there was much positive feedback from residents who were provided with free security items and leaflets, as well as an opportunity to share their concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour. Yalding Zumba ladies: The last Zumba class of the year at the village hall takes place on Wednesday December 17 at 7pm. This session will be followed by a festive drink at 8pm. All are welcome to join in. Call Tanya on 07531 839159 for details. The date of the first Zumba session of 2015 is Wednesday January 7 at 7pm. Support local charities: The Yuletide Market on Saturday, December 6, offers a great opportunity for our village charities to raise funds. Amongst the many stalls, there will be various charity stalls, such as the GamBLE craft stall, and the Baptist Church stall. The Friends of Yalding Surgery should benefit enormously from the raffle which will be drawn during the evening and the church from funds raised at the Christmas tree exhibition within. School Nativity play: The children will be performing their Nativity play in the school hall on Wednesday and Thursday, December 10-11. There will be two performances on Wednesday. The first at 9.30am and the second at 1.45pm. On Thursday, there is a 7pm performance. On Tuesday December 16, the younger children from Yalding School will be visiting Twyford Pre-school in the village hall to attend its Nativity play. 3-1 victory: The only game for Yalding and Laddingford FC last weekend was the Sunday Reserves game at Goudhurst, where the team sought their first win of the season. The Reserves were in control from the start, but it took Ollie Tucker 30 minutes to score his first goal, followed by another ten minutes later. When Nathan Fitzer scored an own goal, Goudhurst were back in the game. Soon afterwards, Yalding gave away a penalty which was saved by Will, the Yalding goalie. Finally Fitzer scored a final goal to complete the 3-1 victory. This weekend, the Saturday side play at Rolvendon in the County Cup, and the Sunday Reserves kick off at The Kintons at 10.30am. The First team travels to Green Street Blues. Christmas is coming: Twyford Pre-school children are feeling very festive as they work on their Christmas projects and rehearse for their Nativity play. Also for the carols which they will be singing around the tree on the village green for the opening of the Yuletide Market on Saturday evening at 4.45pm. I wonder if Father Christmas will be with them this year.
