Gills boss not giving up

Gillingham

- By Luke Cawdell

The chase is on for the League 1 automatic promotion places.

Gillingham’s impressive recent form has renewed hope they could finish inside the top two this season. It remains a long shot but boss Justin Edinburgh isn’t giving it up.

He said: “There are still enough points to play for.

“Every game will be tough for every team from now until the end of the season and we have to keep chasing the pack.

“We have come out the other side of the blip (losing three in a row) and are winning in different ways. We have to find ways to win matches and it has been pleasing. It has set us up nicely for a hectic April.”

Gillingham have eight games left and five of them are at home.

As one of the country’s bestperforming teams at home this season – having lost only twice at Priestfield – Edinburgh is rightly confident that they can keep pushing the leading sides all the way.

Leaders Burton are nine points ahead of the Gills but with a game in hand and the sides still to meet again, hopes of catching them is not out of the question.

Burton failed to score and picked up just a point over Easter. One-time leaders Coventry are the visitors to Priestfield tomorrow (Saturday), a team who have won just four from 21 games since beating the Gills 4-1 in November. Edinburgh said: “We have to make home advantage count.

“We have had some fantastic performances and results at home and it gives us a chance.

“We have to do a lot of travelling, the most in the league. Throughout those last four games, we have been unbeaten.

“We’ve shown real character to get out of the blip and hopefully that can stand us in good stead for the run-in.”

Gills won 1- 0 at Bury on Easter Monday thanks to Luke Norris’ goal and could welcome back defender John Egan against Coventry.

The 23-year-old centre-back hasn’t played since midFebruary after picking up a knee injury in training.

Edinburgh will have Welsh international George Williams available for selection again but Bradley Dack (hamstring) is not expected to be fit in time.
