So dealing with the intensity of an Ashes rivalry should prove no problem for the Staplehurst cricketer, who has been called up by England over-70s for a three-match series against Australia Breed, who turned 70 this year, came through trials at Leicester to take his place in England’s 18-man squad. The first of three 50-over tests takes place at Old Buckenham in Norfolk on Wednesday. Breed, who was responsible for the safety of the Queen, the Queen Mother, Princess Diana and Prince Charles on royal visits to Kent in the 1990s, is ready to face the Australians. He said: “I was quite proud when I got the call. “The fact I’m still playing cricket at this age is good but to be called up by England was quite a surprise. I thought those days had gone. “I used to be quick but these days I’m a left-arm medium-pacer and a middle-order right-hand batsman. I still open the bowling for Kent over60s. Australia came over the year before last and England beat them but I’m told they’re a lot stronger now. “We’ve been told fitness is key to this! “The standard is very high and it’s only getting better as people have a younger outlook on life and are much fitter. The rivalry will be quite strong on the field – although sporting, of course – but after the game everyone’s social. “It will be like stepping back in time to when everyone mingled after the game and had a drink.” Breed has played for Staplehurst for 24 years and before that had 28 years with the Kent Police team. He said: “I want to play for as long as I can. “For my 70th birthday my wife bought me a new bat, new bag and new boots, so maybe she’s keen for me to carry on. I think she wants me out of the house! “I play for Staplehurst 2nds, with all the youngsters. We’re a thriving village club with over 400 members in the cricket, tennis and social club, of which 50% are under 18.” The second Ashes match is at Radlett on July 20, followed by Burridge on July 29. 3rds, Upchurch 3rds v Sheldwich. 1B Central: Holborough Anchorians 2nds v Lordswood 3rds, Lenham v Bapchild 3rds, Minster 3rds v Rainham 3rds, Sherwood 2nds v Rodmersham 2nds, Stonehouse v Higham & Mockbeggar. 2A East: Borstal 2nds v Cobham 2nds, Deal Victoria & Barns Close 2nds v Walmer 2nds, Littlebourne 2nds v Westgate-On-Sea 2nds, Mersham Sports 2nds v Holcombe & Blue Bell Hill 2nds, Old Williamsonians 2nds v Leeds & Broomfield 2nds. 2B Central: Lordswood 4ths v Frindsbury 3rds, Milstead 2nds v Gravesend 4ths, Rumwood v Upchurch 4ths, The Mote 4ths v Sheppey 2nds. 2C Central: Holborough Anchorians 3rds v New Ash Green 2nds, Holmesdale 3rds v Gravesend RF 2nds, Hunton Wanderers 2nds v Headcorn 2nds, Leybourne 2nds v Yalding.
