Fortnightly collections to continue

-

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) previously said it would not return to weekly collections despite pressure from residents.

The fortnightly rota, which applies to every property in the borough with enough storage space, saves the authority £1million a year but people in blocks of flats complain it’s led to piling mounds of rubbish.

Residents at Farleigh Court, Farleigh Lane, and Sandling Park, Sandling Lane, claimed the new rota had led to foul odours and maggots but the council claimed the real problem was a lack of recycling.

Last May we reported how rubbish was left to fester for two months at Wyatt Street’s Shipley Court. The result of fly tipping was eventually cleared by landlord Hyde Housing.

In January Golding Homes sealed off bin chutes at three blocks to stop people dumping recyclable rubbish in general waste bins. The change caused uproar.
