Murphy nets late double

- By Craig Tucker

Maidstone remain unbeaten in pre-season after a pair of late goals from Tom Murphy at Ashford on Tuesday night.

Stones old boys Rory Hill and Shaun Welford scored twice in as many minutes to give the Nuts and Bolts an early lead.

But summer signing Murphy scored twice in the last nine minutes to secure a 2-2 draw.

Michael Phillips and Paul Booth were the other ex-Maidstone players in the home lineup, while Ashford are managed by Danny Lye, who helped Stones win promotion to the Ryman League, Premier Division.

Stones named five academy players in their side. One of them, Ryan Golding, lasted only 14 minutes before a badly cut head from a high boot saw him taken to hospital.

Boss Jay Saunders said: “It was good to see our old players, especially as they’re lads who all did well for me.

“It was a good game, a chance for some lads who’ve not had minutes to get minutes and a chance to have a look at a couple of trialists.

“Ryan Golding’s OK. He was a little bit dizzy but I spoke to him Tuesday night and he’s fine, just a bit gutted he had to come off because he wanted to do well.”

Jack Paxman scored Maidstone’s 51st-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Sevenoaks last Thursday.

That was followed by a 4- 0 victory at Mark Goldberg’s new-look Welling on Saturday.

Kevin Lokko headed the opener against his old club after 16 minutes and Bobby-Joe Taylor drove home the second on 37 minutes.

Callum Driver’s 20-yard shot made it three after 69 minutes, with Flisher completing victory 10 minutes from time.

“The main thing is still fitness,” said Saunders. “We haven’t really worked on shape yet, we’ve kind of thrown them on the pitch and mixed things up a bit to make sure people are getting the minutes they need.

“The performances have been good and we’ve scored some good goals.

“Any manager will say they don’t get carried away by friendlies but you’d rather be winning than losing.

“A lot of people knew, and I knew, that it would be a good test at Welling. We looked good going forward and had plenty of pace.”
