Schoolboy Charlie Girling should have been in the stands, cheering on his football team Maidstone United during their first game of the season on Saturday.

Instead fans held a minute’s applause in memory of the 12-year-old, from Ash Close in Aylesford, who died at an international Scouting convention in Finland two weeks before.

The tribute, organised by supporters with the backing of the club and Charlie’s family, took place during the 12th minute as the Stones took on York City at the Gallagher Stadium.

The timing was chosen to mark the youngster’s age.

The clapping was followed by a chorus of ‘one Charlie Girling’, while a tribute to the young football fan was published in the match programme.

Newly-promoted United were held to a 1-1 draw, with the tie broadcast live on BT Sport.

The gesture came after dozens of balloons were released by family and friends at a remembrance event at Ferryfield in his hometown on Thursday. An investigation is taking place into what caused the Maplesden Noakes pupil’s sudden death, on Sunday, July 24.

Charlie, who was described as a boy who “lived life to the full” had been at the camp with 1st Aylesford Scout Group. He had been a member since he was six.

Now money is being raised in his name to help other youngsters.

On the Scout group’s JustGiving page, it states: “The family would like to raise money so that we can continue to develop and offer local children the fantastic opportunities in Scouting that Charlie had.”

Among the projects the troop has been raising money for is an appeal for a new hut in Forstal Road.

Although planning permission was granted several years ago, an estimated £350,000 was needed to build it. Some donors suggested the finished building be named after Charlie.
