Pub opens after two-year closure – bikers welcome

A rural pub, hailed as a lifeline for villagers, has reopened after being closed for two years.

Some 100 residents clubbed together to try and buy the Hook and Hatchet in Hucking when time was called by the previous landlord in 2014.

It was one of just two buildings in the village open to the public, making it an important meeting place and earning it a listing as a community asset.

But despite raising £160,000, it was well still shy of Shepherd Neame’s £450,000 asking price and the bid was unsuccessful, with locals fearing for the future of the Church Road inn.

But now, the pub has reopened under new management, complete with adjoining campsite.

Allan Bishop, 53, and partner Sharon Hodgson, 45, bought it in February, before starting on a major refurbishment costing more than £100,000.

While both have experience in the industry, it is the first time they have owned a pub together.

Miss Hodgson said: “We were looking to buy a pub and we loved the location out in the sticks. We read about the history and how important it was to the locals.

“They have been very supportive and seem really happy with the changes we have made. It’s getting busier and busier every week.” The new menu is full of traditional pub grub, while the building’s historical features, including the fireplaces, have been take back to their original state.

The pair, who are keen motorcyclists, are holding Two Wheel Tuesdays for cyclists and bikers to meet up and take advantage of special offers. They are also having classic car Sundays, open mic nights and Saddle Up Saturdays, with special deals and facilities laid on for horse riders.

Miss Hodgson said: “We are positive for the future. We have lots of ideas and would like to put on a few mini music festivals.”
