Appeal over driver who killed dog

-

A man whose beloved dog was killed in a hit-and-run crash just feet away from him and his eightyear-old son is appealing for the driver to come forward.

Hetty, a 12-year-old black labrador, was struck by a large black estate car in Lenham Road, Platts Heath, at about 1.45pm on Sunday. The driver did not stop and continued in the direction of Sandway, near Lenham.

Now her owner is asking the driver to give themselves up.

Chris Horwood, a guitar teacher, said: “Hetty was still alive after the incident for a couple of minutes. I held her and wrapped her in a blanket and her little tail was still wagging away at me, and then she was gone.

“I have lost our dog and I loved her but it could have been my son that was hit.

“The driver didn’t even attempt to stop. I just want to get justice for Hetty now.”

Anyone who hits a dog is required by law to report it to police. The same rules apply to hitting a goat, horse, cattle, sheep or pig but do not apply to cats.

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of this incident and inquires are ongoing.”

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting 14-1381. A woman once dubbed Britain’s oldest cleaner has shown no intention of hanging up her mop as she celebrates turning 93.

Known as Marge, her special day on Monday was punctuated by shouts of “Congratulations!” from passing customers.

It is clear she enjoys a wry sense of humour in her job.

When we arrived to interview her and get pictures and video, she quipped: “As long as I don’t have to get my kit off.”

Marge was born in Cornwall on August 15, 1923, when Stanley Baldwin was Prime Minister. In November that year, Adolf Hitler led a failed coup in Munich in an attempt to seize power.

Marge, of College Road, Maidstone, moved to Kent after marrying husband Bill and they had five children.

In the Second World War she picked fruit to send to the Army and she also spent 40 years working for Alan Firmin picking fruits and seeds from the firm’s orchards.
