Fundraisers target Rio in Olympic rowing challenge

- By Alan Smith ajsmith@thekmgroup.co.uk @ajsmithKM

Dandelion Time is running an indoor rowathon again this year, in what promises to be its biggest challenge so far.

In the first year of the event, the charity had 500 rowers complete a distance equivalent to rowing from Marden to Monte Carlo.

In the second year, fundraisers went further, rowing the distance from Marden to Madagascar.

In the Olympic year, the challenge is to row to Rio – a distance the charity reckons to be 5,300 miles.

Various schools and clubs will be holding their own rowathons to add to the group total during the two-week challenge, which starts on Monday, September 26.

They include Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, Oakwood Park Grammar, North School in Ashford, and Cornwallis Academy, along with corporate supporters such as Outset, Cook Foods, Viridor, Kimberly-Clark, 7R Performance, All Seasons Glamping, Heart FM and the Kent Messenger.

The more groups that join in, the easier it will be for everyone to collectively reach the target.

Individuals can also help: there will be an open session on rowing machines in Jubilee Square, Maidstone, on Wednesday, October 5, and at 7R Performance’s gym in Maidstone Road, Marden, on Friday, October 7.

Dandelion Time based in West Farleigh is a charity for children and families struggling with trauma arising from physical or emotional abuse, neglect and domestic violence.

It is also the Kent Messenger’s charity of the year.
