Strike three for Gills

-

It’s been a bittersweet start to the season for Tonbridge Angels boss Steve McKimm. New signing Andre McCollin scored their first goal of the campaign on Saturday but then had his leg broken by a bad tackle. Tonbridge went on to beat Wingate & Finchley 3-0 at Longmead before winning 2-1 at Burgess Hill on Tuesday. But defender Ugo Udoji dislocated his shoulder in Sussex, leaving McKimm to contemplate whether or not it had been a good first week. He said: “Footballingwise, yes, injury-wise, no. “Andre broke his fibula on Saturday so he’s out for a while. He’s had the op and we’ll wait for the rehab on that. “I reckon it will be months. That wasn’t good because he was looking sharp in his first game. “The bloke went through the back of him and broke his fibula so I’m not happy with that. “Ugo dislocated his shoulder at Burgess Hill so we’ve not had the best of luck but we’ve had two good performances and two good wins. “The gloss has been taken off by the injuries but the performances have been good.” Damian Scannell and Nathan Elder scored the other Angels goals against Wingate, while Nick Wheeler and Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson were on target at Burgess Hill. “That was a tight game,” McKimm said. “We had to work hard and we did and got our rewards in the end. It will be a tough place to go so I’m proud of the players and how well they did. “The players have picked up where they left off last year, playing some nice stuff. There are times when you’ve got to go a bit longer but we’re doing the things I ask them to do and getting their rewards. “We’re only two games in but they’re looking promising and enjoying it, which is one of the main things in football.” Tonbridge make the long trip to Lowestoft tomorrow (Saturday) before welcoming Harrow to Longmead on Tuesday. Tom Phipp and Jerrome Sobers are both getting closer to fitness after taking part in a reserveteam game on Tuesday.
