It will be making a welcome return to the Ivy Club on Wednesday, August 31 (2pm in St Andrew’s Church hall). The Barming History Society: Is about to start another season. Meetings are usually held on the second Monday of the month from September until May and topics include national and internatio­nal events as well as local issues. The venue is The Village Hall, Heath Road. Joint membership costs £17.50 and covers children under 18 at the same address while single membership is £10 but, by joining before the end of August the prices are reduced to £15 and £8 respective­ly. A two-course meal with coffee or tea currently costs £10 and is available on the first Wednesday of the month but a decision on whether to attend must be given to Derek (01622 726241) by noon on the Monday prior to the lunch. The venue alternates between The Bull, Tonbridge Road (which will host this September’s feast) and The Redstart, North Street. There is no obligation to come to any given number of meetings. The meal for September will consist of smoked haddock fishcakes with spring onions followed by strawberri­es and cream. Links Guides: Are you 10-14 years old and want to find out more about Guides? Or maybe you have thought of joining Guides but you are not able to make weekly meetings for one reason or the other i.e. due to health, other commitment­s or location and transport issues. Then we can help. We are a holiday Guiding group (we meet about 3 or 4 times a year during the school holidays). The next meeting is on Sunday September 18 locally from 10am to 4pm. There will be a full programme which will include lots of outdoor activities so come to have some Teenagers across Maidstone have been taking part in challenges to raise money and awareness for charities. The 15 to 17-year-olds took part in the National Citizens Service, a four-week social developmen­t course featuring team-building tasks and camping. One group, including Georgia Mehmet-Bussey, front and Chloe Brown, both 16, raised £234 for Loose Valley Care Home by jumping on treadmills and bikes at Tru Gym in Broadway shopping centre, Maidstone and collective­ly covering more than 150 miles. A quiz night at the Meet Me Cafe near Fremlin Walk raised £200 for the Linden Lea Nursery School in Downswood. There will also be a screening of War Horse at the D’Lishious cafe, in the Corn Exchange, Maidstone, with proceeds helping mental health charity Mind. It starts today (Friday) at 5.30pm. Charity Cricket: Bearsted Cricket Club will play Bearsted and Thurnham Club with the proceeds going to charity on Bearsted Green on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29, starting at 1pm. Cricket Fixtures: Bearsted Cricket Club’s 1st XI will play a home league match against Bidborough on Saturday August 27 at 1pm while at the same time, the 2nd XI will play away to Bidborough in the league. The Sunday XI will play a friendly match away to Challock on Sunday August 29. Music on the Green: This will take place on Bearsted Green on Sunday August 28 from noon to 9pm. Tickets cost from £6. In addition to the live music, there will be boutique food stalls, real ales, local produce plus children and family entertainm­ent.
