Joint flood meeting: The Environment Agency’s newsletter issued in August and put out to residents on Parish News, disappointingly expresses the decision not to build flood storage areas on the Rivers Beult and Medway, as we all believed was to happen, but to provide grants for property level protection (PLP) instead. PLP means barriers for our doors and such measures as were provided after the last flood. Sadly these measures are thought to be unlikely to work in most cases, due to the type of bricks and other building materials. Collier Street parish council hosted a meeting last week, to which Helen Grant and representatives from affected parish councils including Yalding went along. Representatives from the Medway Beult and Teise Flood Group were also there. As a result Helen Grant is to request further information/ data from the EA and a further meeting will be held in September. Meanwhile if you are unhappy with the situation, do contact helen. grant.mp@parliament.uk, borough councillor, Steve McCloughlin on 07711 565489 or flood group leader, stephen@yalding.com Mens’ breakfast: The monthly mens’ breakfast session takes place in the church on Saturday September 3 from 7.30am. A good breakfast at nominal cost is supplied for men with opinions they are keen to share. For details contact Jeremy Tenison-Smith on 01892 730910. Zumba starts again: After a summer break, Tanya will be back in the village hall every Wednesday evening, starting on Wednesday September 7 at 7pm. www.tanyashepelev. zumba.com Baptist church events: On Sunday September 4 at 10.30am morning service and Treasure Seekers Sunday School will take place at the Baptist Church. Ride + Stride: Plan a trip round Kent churches to take on foot or bicycle on Saturday September 10 to take part in the annual Ride + Stride event, when many churches in the county will be open to visitors between 10am and 6pm. Charity cream tea. : A very well supported afternoon on August 25, in aid of Breast Cancer Care raised a staggering £910 for this vital cause. Beautiful strawberry tea, with strawberries kindly given by Clock House Farm, and a wonderful selection of home made cakes donated by supporters of the cause, made for a memorable tea. There was pink tombola, and a number of guessing games along with two big raffles; one organised by Rachel Curley in aid of Cancer Research, and the other by the organisers of the main event, Sue Gerrish and Dee-Ann Stead, with help from their friends. PARISH COUNCIL: The parish council hold their next meeting on Tuesday September 6 at 7.30pm at the village hall. All residents are welcome to attend, but anyone wishing to address the meeting, should contact the clerk, Angela Gent, on 01622 814134 or clerk@ yaldingparishcouncil.gov.uk at least 24 hours beforehand. In the Churchyard: The churchyard working party known as the vandals meet in the churchyard on Saturday September 3 at 9.15am for another morning of volunteering just a week ahead of the church of the church fete. New volunteers are always welcome. Call Paul Mahoney for details on 01622 814420. The fete on Saturday September 10 takes place from 1-4pm in the churchyard and features the famous teddy bear parachute drop for a second year. Lots of fun and games and a raffle with great prizes; indeed fun for all the family and lovely refreshments to suit all palates. More cricket success!: Yalding Cricket Club continue to finish their season at a canter as they defeated a team chasing promotion again at the weekend. Yalding bowled first after Gravesend won the toss and chose to bat. They came out with some big hitting getting them off to a fast start., but regular wickets helped Yalding hold them back, and thanks to six wickets from Jonathan Fenn, they were eventually bowled out for 148; seven overs short of their 40. With Yalding claiming the unused overs, they went out to bat knowing a steady scoring rate would see them home. Yalding started shakily, losing three wickets to Baucham on a wicket offering plenty of support. However, Yalding fought back and eventually reached their target with six wickets and plenty of overs to spare.. The star with the bat was Ali Ratcliffe who played his first game in several years and scored 54. He was sported well by Geertsema with 26 and Ryan with 21. Yalding finish their season on Saturday September 3 at The Kintons against local rivals, Hunton.
