LOOK HOW FAR WE’VE COME, SAYS STONES KEEPER

- By Craig Tucker

Lee Worgan can hardly believe Maidstone are facing Wrexham as equals – two years on from their FA Cup clash.

Keeper Worgan was busy as the Reds flew at Ryman League United in a 3-1 second-round victory in north Wales.

Back-to-back promotions have seen the Stones join Wrexham in the National League and they meet at the Gallagher tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

Worgan, a former Wales under-21 international, said: “It’s crazy. You’ve got to pinch yourself as a player and I guess that goes for everyone.

“To think a couple of years ago you’re playing Wrexham and it’s our biggest cup game and now we’re equals with them in the league.

“It just shows you how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.

“I remember Wrexham having the ball that night!

“I knew the assistant manager at the time and he said that was the best they’d played all season. They’re a good side, another massive club and one that should probably be in the Football League.

“But we’re level pegging with them now, we’re at home so I don’t see why we can’t approach the game to win it.”

Tom Mills, Alex Flisher, Jamie Coyle and James Rogers are the other survivors from Stones’ FA Cup run. Worgan added: our minds but they’ve had a big change in personnel since then so we’ve got to approach it professionally and make sure we go out and get the points.”

Worgan claimed his first clean sheet of the season in Maidstone’s victory at Boreham Wood.

It came two days after he kept the score down in a 4-1 defeat by Forest Green.

Worgan said: “We knew that some of the teams in this league are incredibly strong, which Forest Green showed last Saturday.

“Mentally, you’ve got to get over a result like that but fortunately we could put it right straight away.

“We’ve played better and not managed to come away with a win or even a point, so to do it the other way round (at Boreham Wood) was nice but we deserved it because we defended well.”

Worgan found himself playing behind three centre-halves after a late change in formation. He said: “It’s a little bit different with the three. It involves a lot more communication.

“We’ve got to talk to the wing-backs a little bit more but we looked fairly comfortable with it.”
