Late goal falls United’s way

-

It was Maidstone’s turn to benefit from a late goal as Jay Saunders marked his 300th game in charge with a 1- 0 victory at Boreham Wood on Monday. Having lost to late strikes at Aldershot and Tranmere in the opening weeks of the National League season, United couldn’t afford to feel too much sympathy after Kevin Lokko’s injury-time winner. Saunders, his side back in action 48 hours after facing Forest Green, said: “How many times do you say you play really well and you come away with nothing? We haven’t played to the best of our abilities but we’ve come away with the win. That happens sometimes. “There’s plenty of room for improvement but I’m never a big fan of the SaturdayMonday thing and I thought we tired badly in the second half.” With midfielder Jack Paxman ruled out with a huge blister on the sole of his foot, Saunders made a late decision to switch to a three-man defence. It proved effective with Wood struggling to find a way past Jamie Coyle, Lokko and Anthony Acheampong. Stones did, though, finish with a back four after Acheampong went off injured. Saunders said: “Coming away from home, first and foremost I didn’t really want to concede goals, so we changed the shape slightly. “We tried something different and I thought we looked solid with it and dangerous on the break first half. “But that went out the window once Anthony Acheampong got injured and then I thought it took us too long to adjust back to the other shape.”
