Mavila’s second chance

- By Craig Tucker

New signing Nathan Mavila wants to rebuild his career at Maidstone after leaving West Ham.

Mavila (pictured right) was released at the end of a two-year contract and has joined United after various Football League trials.

The 20-year-old, who plays left-back or left-midfield, made the bench for a Europa League qualifier in Romania last season.

He considered himself unlucky to be let go as West Ham moved to the Olympic Stadium but now believes it was for the best.

Mavila said: “It’s been tough, turning professional at West Ham and not making the grade for them. As they were moving into the Olympic Stadium there was so much going on and it was out with the old and in with the new.

“I was unfortunate to be one of the outs but it’s a blessing in disguise because this could be the start of something here and an opportunity to get back on track and actually take my career seriously.

“I’d love to use Maidstone as a stepping stone. No disrespect to them but I want to get higher.”

Mavila was training at Charlton when youth coach Jason Euell – who knows Maidstone boss Jay Saunders – told him United were after a left-sided player. His agent contacted Saunders and the youngster signed after a trial. Mavila – who is a friend of ex-Maidstone winger Charles Banya – is enjoying working with Saunders. He said: “I want to thank Jay firstly because he is a manager who trusts youth.

“As a young player you need a manager to believe in you and that’s what I’m hoping Jay’s all about because it gets the best out of you.

“I was shocked when I saw how big the crowd was here but I’ve heard it’s a regular thing.

“That’s great for a young player because you up.”

Mavila will never forget making West Ham’s squad for their Europa League qualifier against Astra a year ago.

He said: “It was a funny one because I came in from training with the under-21s and they said, ‘ you’re on the bench’.

“We flew out on a private jet and it was unreal finding out what the first team was all about.

“The crowd were amazing and you’re thinking, ‘wow, people are travelling from England to Romania to watch a game’.

“I didn’t get on but was thankful for the opportunity to be in the squad.” it toughens
