POWERLIFTING: MANNERING LOOKING STRONG ENOUGH FOR AN 11TH WORLD TITLE Cycling
Maidstone Roller Hockey Club’s new signing will travel more than 1,200 miles to play for them this season. The club have signed Ricardo Ferreira, who lives in Portugal and will travel to represent the club at all senior tournaments. When visiting friends in the UK this summer, Ferreira joined a couple of Maidstone’s training sessions at the YMCA in Loose. He was so impressed with the club that he asked to become a member, despite living in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. Head coach Tommy Harbord said: “We are delighted Ricardo has decided to join us this season. “We’ve had foreign players in the team before but never someone who is still living in another country.” Powerlifter Dave Mannering is hoping to win his 11th world title. He gets the chance after qualifying for November’s World Championships in Hampshire. The 55-year-old has trained at the Howard de Walden centre in Maidstone since 1975. Mannering, who competes in the 75kg class, squatted 200kg, bench-pressed 130kg and deadlifted 232.5kg to qualify, breaking five world records in the over-55 master category. He said: “I’m feeling quite confident. I’ve just broken five world records and, at the moment, no one else is doing those numbers. The biggest threat is someone from Iceland.” Mannering has no plans to stop lifting soon. He said: “I don’t want to retire until I’m 80. If I can still lift at that age I’ll be able to do other things as well.” Maidstone Weightlifting Club meet at the Howard de Walden on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (5.30-8.30pm). Anyone aged 12 or over is welcome. Just turn up, or for more details call Dave on 07979 500813. Piper’s perseverance is exemplary as his record-breaking ride was achieved after eight years of trying. Despite swirling wind on the R25/ 3H South Wales course, he took an impressive 36 seconds off Steve Berry’s record time of 51.15 set in July 2010. The race team’s Nick Malins demonstrated great late-season form last weekend. On Saturday he rode in the East Sussex Cycling Association 10-mile course at East Hoathly, Eastbourne, where he finished third in 21.25. The following day he travelled to Thanet to compete in the KCA 25-mile course where he finished second in both the scratch and vets competitions. Malins was accompanied by a strong turnout from his Abellio team-mates and San Fairy Ann members. Results: Nick Malins 54min28sec; Mark Doxey 57.38; Martin Foord 57.44 (course best); Richard Jones 58.53 (personal best); Paul Fairman 1hr00min49sec; Alan Ng (SFA) 1: 01.48; Nigel Perry (SFA) 1: 04.08; Emma Juden (SFA) 1: 09.14.
