Lorry in primary school crash

Primary pupils were lucky not to be hurt when a lorry crashed into the entrance of their school.

The cement mixer collided with the railings at Hunton Primary.

Its wheel became caught in the railing, and it mounted the verge on West Street damaging part of a hedge running alongside the school playground, and knocking over a speed sign. Nobody was hurt. The accident, around 11am last Thursday came just days before a parish council meeting, discussing road safety in the village.

Hunton is currently served by two main roads, East Street and West Street, and residents are growing concerned about increased HGV traffic.

There is very little pavement space in the village, except for a small stretch outside the school.

And there are frequent parking problems outside the school at pick-up and drop-off times.

Earlier this year, a mother and child had a lucky escape when a passing car had to take evasive action to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle, and hit the mother’s open car door as she was strapping her child into a seat.

Although East Street is a residential road, the speed limit is 60mph. The speed limit on West Street is 30mph.

The driver of the lorry initially left the scene, but later returned to leave his details.

A KCC spokesman said: “We work to mitigate the impact of freight in Kent, and have a scheme called Lorry Watch to tackle the issue of lorries using inappropriate rural routes.”
