Madness on M20

-

A factory worker drove the wrong way along the M20 at 80mph after making a 50-hour trip from Poland with no food and little sleep.

As he headed north, Krzysztof Stopko did a “juddering ‘U’ turn” as stunned motorists watched in horror.

Then, ignoring warnings from other drivers, the 35-year-old travelled for two-and-a-half miles between junctions 10 and 11 towards oncoming vehicles. Some managed to swerve but Stopko’s car eventually smashed into a car heading to Ashford.

Judge Heather Norton has jailed him for 32 months, after Stopko admitted causing injury by dangerous driving.

He was banned from driving for five years. The heartbroken mother of a “bubbly” teenager seriously injured when a car ploughed into a beauty salon says he will never be the same again.

Liam Owen, 14, from Garlinge, was a passenger in the car when it crashed into Girls World in High Street, Minster, at 1.45am on Saturday.

He was rushed to King’s College Hospital in London with life-threatening injuries.

The Hartsdown Academy pupil, who is not expected to be able to go back to school until next year, suffered a collapsed lung, shattered pelvis, severe facial injuries and a broken thigh.

His mother, Louise Keenleyside, has been told by doctors it is likely he will walk with a permanent limp due to the damage sustained to his pelvis.

“This will affect him for the rest of his life,” she said.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was also seriously hurt and taken to King’s, while another teenage passenger escaped with just minor injuries.
