Lapses in concentration costly as hosts take advantage

K Sports endured a frustrating afternoon as they lost 3-1 in their Kent Open Premier C opener at Old Williamsonians last Saturday. Having absorbed the early pressure Sports started to look more settled, with youngster Ben Newmarch impressing down the right wing. The Old Wills left-back picked up a green card for chopping at the Cobdown player. In the second half, K Sports let their frustration along with their views on some of the decisions get the better of them and they were soon down to 10 men. Old Wills then punished them further by scoring from the resulting penalty corner. Sports refused to sit back and tried to take the game to the home side, equalising when a solid strike from James Clerkly was stepped over by Dave Wood and beat the keeper. However, a lapse in concentration by the Sports defence minutes later saw them fall behind again and they were caught out for a third goal. The ladies fielded Claire Ayres and Lorraine Mullally, both from the 2nd XI, as they beat Anchorians 2- 0 in Kent Division 3 to post their first win of the campaign. Good passing down the right between Jo Fowler and Fiona Percival created chances for Erica Yeong but the visiting keeper was equal to the test. Sports continued to push with Yeong linking well with Karen Swinson on the left. With the support of Kerry Fowler in the middle, they were able to force a number of short corners. The first two were put wide by Jo Fowler. The third was well defended by Anchorians, but Jo Fowler intercepted the clearance and was able to make a chip over the keeper to put them ahead. It was 2- 0 in the second half when a good push out from a short corner by Yeong saw Jo Fowler find Percival, who managed to turn the ball home. The 2nds ran out 2-1 winners at Anchorians 3rds with goals from Sue Rea and Emma Thorpe. Anchorians took the lead but Sports equalised from a short corner with a stunning Rea strike. Thorpe made it 2-1 from a rebound to complete the comeback.
