May leaves with praise from boss

Jay May has left Maidstone for Hythe with a glowing tribute from manager Jay Saunders. Saunders says Stones wouldn’t be in the National League without the big striker, who finished top scorer in back-to-back promotions. May, 30, was made available last week, with his move to Hythe going through on Wednesday morning. Saunders said: “Jay’s been outstanding for us. “I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t think we’d be in this league without his goals. “He got 25 the season before last, nearly 20 last season and scored some important goals. “He was a pleasure to have at the club and I’m sure he’ll do well for Hythe. “It’s hard to let him go because you’re all looking for that sort of player. “Any manager will tell you, they all want that big man up front. “In this league, a lot of the big men are probably a bit quicker than Jay, no disrespect but he was great for us and I honestly thought he would play a part this year but things change. I’ve loved having him at the club.” May is set to make his Hythe debut against Walton Casuals in the FA Trophy this weekend. Cannons boss Clive Cook said: “This is a massive bit of business, no doubt about it. “It’s the biggest signing I’ve ever made. When I heard who else was in for him I thought we might miss out. “He fits into the system we play. He’s a big lad who brings other people into the game but he’s good in the box himself.”
