A first time author has written an erotic gay vampire novel.

Pascal by Asher Meekins has been endorsed by semi-finalist on BBC reality singing show The Voice, Vangelis Polydorou, who said he “couldn’t put it down”.

Mr Meekins, 49, who works at B&Q in Barker Road, Maidstone, says the fact his characters live in the real world among humans and can even survive sunlight makes his novel unique.

Mr Meekins said: “It’s the first of its kind because the vampires are integrated into society. The government knows about them. They are accepted but not really known about. It is dark but it’s got a bit of humour too.” The story follows Reece who, like a young Mr Meekins, was bullied for being different.

He is rescued from a particularly nasty attack by attractive vampire Pascal who whisks him away to Paris where they fall in love and Reece becomes part of the vampire world.

Mr Meekins said the novel, available from Amazon, will make readers laugh and cry and also has gory scenes and erotic descriptions of the characters’ passionate encounters. He admits that as a young man he was “looking for a Pascal of my own to save me”.

Mr Meekins’ dyslexia almost stopped him writing the book after he was called stupid at school and failed his English exams. But eventually he found the courage to type up the story that had been going around in his head for more than four years and featuring in his dreams, with help from a proofreader. The learning difficulty also means he tends to watch horror films rather than read books. He hopes his work will make it onto the big screen. Pascal has already had a song written about him. Friend Shaun Antoni’s number, Pascal: Love running through his veins, is available on various websites including Amazon. Mr Meekins, who moved to Maidstone as a child but now lives in Lordswood, is already working on a sequel named Teardrop after another character in Pascal.
