Maidstone were caught cold at Old Bordenians – but battled back for a draw in Kent/ Sussex Regional 1.

With fourth-placed Bords eyeing a win that would take them level with Maidstone the visitors needed a good start, but, despite having pushback, they conceded after just 15 seconds last Saturday.

Maidstone levelled when Brendan Baker made no mistake at the back post and when OBs pressed high they left themselves open to the counter attack – a route Maidstone took to their second as Martin outpaced two defenders before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.

Steve Marks took Maidstone’s player-of-thematch award with the best chances coming from turnovers and penalty corners. The Old Boys took advantage of one of theirs to make it 2-2. Maidstone: Darren Marchant, Brendan Baker, Nick Leatherbarrow, Matt Emery, Phil Morrison, Jimmy Christmas, Steve Marks, Jon Stiff, Waqas Dastagir, Joe Martin, Kenny Stibbles, Richard Turner, Andy Turner, Joe Broadbent.

Youngster Chris Howson scored on his 1st XI debut, but Maidstone lost an incident-packed England Hockey Trophy against Gore Court on Sunday.

The visitors struck first from a penalty corner but Howson applied the finishing touch following good work baseline.

Court regained the initiative from a penalty corner before Andy Turner’s reverse-stick effort ensured the sides switched ends all square, but when keeper Darren Marchant questioned some of the referee’s decisions he was sent off, and along the replacement Mike Smith was beaten 15 minutes from time. Maidstone’s player-ofthe-match was Matt Emery. Maidstone: Darren Marchant, Mark Christmas, Matt Emery, Phil Morrison, Jamie Graham, Jimmy Christmas, Waqas Dastagir, Kenny Stibbles, Chris Howson, Harry Bone, Andy Turner, Joe Broadbent, Mike Smith, Zach Quinn, Richard Turner.

The ladies’ 1sts earned a point against Old Loughtonians in East League Premier Division.

The home side made the most of Maidstone’s slow start, but late in the second half, from a short corner, Catherine Broadbent’s strike rebounded to Steph Lurshay and she fired home. Vikki Taylor took the player-of-the-match award.

MP Helen Grant made her debut for the 4ths in a 2-2 draw against Burnt Ash in Kent Division 5.

Nicky Bourne turned in player-of-the-match Rachel Davies’ pass for Maidstone’s first and Davies ran from halfway for the second.

In Kent Open Division 3, 13-year-old James Hodges scored his first senior goal in a 3-1 win for the 5ths at Folkestone 7ths.

Mick Emery and Mark Gibbons also netted.

There were mixed results for the under-14s. The boys beat Burnt Ash 8-2 but the girls lost 10- 0 to Ashford.

Dylan Collie’s hat-trick was the highlight against Ash, with support from Henry Bourdillon (2), Zac Streeter, Sam James and Chris Fahy. K Sports men’s 1sts lost a three-goal lead against Tunbridge Wells vets but rallied to win 6-4. Kai Wilson, Dave Wood and Brook Fowler put them in charge of the Kent Open Premier C clash. But Wells pulled one back from open play, kicked into gear and were level by halftime. Back came Sports, with second goals for Wood and Fowler. Wells added their fourth but Matt Sharp clinched victory with a reverse flick through a crowded D. James Clarkely was player-of-the-match. The men’s 2nds gave Sutton Valence 4ths
