Christmas is when many children look forward to a mountain of presents and sweets but one boy has given it all up to help the homeless.

Harry Jordan, who is just six, told his family he wanted to forgo his usual gifts and instead use the money to help those who have nothing.

The Barming Primary School pupil, of Tonbridge Road, has created a reverse advent calendar and donated more than 70 tins of food, a case of water, toiletries, warm hats, gloves and even a Christmas tree to Maidstone Day Centre in Knightrider Street, Maidstone.

Harry, a devoted Lego collector, did it with a little help from mum Katt and gran Liz Baker.

The KM is working with the centre, which is run by Homeless Care, to collect tins of non-perishable items for our You Can Help campaign, now in its 16th year.

Supportive mum, Katt Jordan, said Harry decided to stockpile items after seeing a homeless person living on the street near his school.

The 32-year-old said: “I don’t know where he got it from. He saw this person living rough and it has made him question why he as a home and food while others have nothing.

“I am so proud of him. At his age most of his friends are writing their Christmas lists and he is thinking of others.”

Harry began collecting at the beginning of December and has also decided to go without his usual after school sweets and Lego magazines as well as an Advent calendar containing dozens of the figurines.

The donations were handed over to volunteers on Saturday.

Zofia Grzymala, centre manager, said: “It’s heartwarming to see people as young as Harry helping those less fortunate. The items he collected are going to make a difference for homeless people in our community.”
