Kent Messenger Maidstone

For those without a roof over their head in Maidstone, the Churches Winter Shelter returns in the New Year, offering beds, a warm meal, companionship and constructive advice.

Now in its fourth year, the scheme reopens for 12 weeks from January 3. It is entirely reliant on the assistance of volunteers and last year opened to 77 people, some who went on to find employment or long term accommodation. But this year your help is needed more than ever.

For those who wish to uncover their culinary skills, a lead cook is required for Wednesday evenings. You can also host a collection tin, raise some money or donate nonfeather pillows and pillow cases. Hair Professional Salon on King Street in Maidstone, has been kind enough to do the laundry for the shelter one night of the week. If you are able to take on some laundry, the shelter can arrange a drop off and a collection.

The shelter is held at a different church each night in the centre of Maidstone with four volunteers on duty from 9pm to 7am. Volunteers who stay overnight are provided with a room to sleep in. If you wish to get involved, please contact Maidstone Shelter on 01622 296 450, email: mcwsoffice@ maidstoneshelter.org.uk or visit www.maidstoneshelter.org.uk

I am also looking forward to my visit to the Maidstone Day Centre where I will be serving Christmas lunch to the homeless on December 22 at Lily Smith House, 15 Knightrider Street, ME15 6LP. The lunch is organised by Homeless Care, which runs the Maidstone Day Centre and is also in need of monetary donations, clothes and food. If you can help call 01622 674074 or see www. homelessinmaidstone.org.uk

I applaud all of you who will be working tirelessly to spread the Christmas cheer. Your selfless and kind deeds do not go unnoticed.
