Forget climate change, we’ve no star names
that is the European Union to the lost generations of the young unemployed in southern Europe, cast aside by the momentous folly that is the euro?
How any sane person could think that so many miss-matched economies could be linked with a single currency defies belief and the young of Greece, Italy, Spain and many other countries are paying the price. The euro single currency project was doomed to failure. Thank goodness Gordon Brown kept us out. Unemployment breeds extremes on the right and the left.
The EU has made no significant contribution to peace in Europe. The peace of Europe was won with the blood of American, Canadian and British soldiers and contingents from other allies.
The guarantor of peace in Europe is and always has been is a strong NATO, which needs strengthening faced with a resurgent Vladimir Putin and various Islamic terrorist groups. Bullies only respect a bigger stick. The combined total contributions to the NATO budget of all other NATO members is less than half of America’s contribution. Is it any wonder that Donald Trump thinks the Europeans are not paying their share. Roger Stanley Lonewood Way, Hadlow kentonline news editor get through the town, its caused by traffic trying to get into the town, therefore the recent works to the gyratory system will have little effect on relieving the congestion.
The much heralded Leeds-Langley relief road, irrespective of any side benefit to the villages, will only be of benefit to traffic from the south of Maidstone heading towards the M20 and that is generally for two one-hour slots morning and evening.
Cllr Burton has been quoted in another publication saying the Leeds and Langley Relief Road will solve the congestion. Perhaps he would publish his research to back this up? So what’s the answer? It appears neither elected politicians nor employed council officers have any realistic ideas but rely instead on ill-thought-out and uncoordinated policies which are unsustainable in the long term.
Do you widen all roads, build more car parks and improve public transport? Or stop building unsustainable housing? Bob Warwick address supplied to editor
The BBC’s mildly apocalyptic build-up to the Donald Trump presidency has continued in typically breathless fashion. Never mind the appointment of a man nicknamed ‘Mad Dog’ as defence secretary or the “climate change denier” taking charge of the environment, the latest revelation is serious: “Reports from the US suggest Donald Trump is struggling to find A-list stars to perform at his inauguration.”
On no. We can all take a threat to world peace and an ecological meltdown but if there’s one thing people won’t stand for, it’s a disappointing line-up at the inauguration.
An “unnamed source” has apparently told an American website it’s been “problematic” finding performers. So it’s gospel then.
The report continues: “When Barack Obama was inaugurated in 2009, he was serenaded by Beyonce and Aretha Franklin... he’s had audiences with the likes of Rihanna, James Taylor and Kendrick Lamar. Donald Trump might not be so lucky.”
Depends what you call luck, I suppose. I’ve never secretly harboured a dream of James Taylor playing in my front room, but each to their own.
Lord knows I’m no fan of Trump but I’m getting slightly sick of this relentless sneering in some parts of the media.
Never afraid of the tough questions, the BBC “asked the stars of the BBC Music Awards” whether they would play.
Rick Astley astutely pointed out that the inauguration of a US president was probably no place for a British artist.
But Swedish singer Zara Larsson revealed: “A lot of artists out there have been very pro-Hillary and anti-Donald.”
Kind of nails the problem for the left-leaning parties. Maybe their politicians should try speaking to real voters, rather than constantly courting the adulation of ‘artists’.
After all, even Bruce Springsteen wasn’t enough.
