‘It’s probably the most frustrated I’ve been’

-

Jay Saunders has never felt so frustrated in almost six years as Maidstone manager. Saunders was shocked by United’s FA Trophy capitulation against Boreham Wood on Tuesday night, having played so well in the first half. He said: “It was a game of two halves and probably sums up our season. “I thought we were in control, should have been two, possibly three up but we don’t take our chances and then come out second half and look a different side. “The minute they scored it almost looked like we gave up and it sums us up as a team and our season at the moment. It’s probably the most frustrated I’ve been since I’ve been here.” Saunders made his feelings clear in the dressing room. He added: “They had to be told a few home truths. It’s a tricky one because you’ve got a big game Saturday but I don’t like losing games of football, it’s as simple as that. “I don’t see how you can go from a performance like that first half to what we got second half. It’s not acceptable.” Saunders revealed after the game that United have missed out on another transfer target. A deal for a striker fell through last week and now a midfielder has gone elsewhere. He said: “We had agreed something with a player in principle and then a full-time club came in and offered him a player-coach role so he’s gone there, which is a bit of a blow because he was an experienced midfielder that would have added to us.”

Wins over big clubs Chester, Torquay, Macclesfield and Eastleigh have shown what Maidstone are capable of but there’s no hiding from their position in the league.

Evans said: “Everyone says the table doesn’t lie. You deserve to be where you are but we shouldn’t be fighting a relegation
