Driver’s petition demands improved lighting on A249
A petition has been launched calling for improvements to lighting on the A249.
Lee Richardson started an online campaign two weeks ago after finding it difficult to see while driving at night on the main road.
The 31-year-old, a joinery workshop foreman, said: “I’ve got astigmatism and wear glasses, so it’s very hard for me to see along that road.
“There’s often cars swerving and drifting as they can’t see what lane they’re in.”
The father-of-two says Detling Hill to the Key Street roundabout is the worst stretch.
“It’s alarming that there is a major problem along there and nothing is being done about it.
“My wife works in Larkfield as a dental nurse and won’t drive along there at night.
“In the daytime there’s no real problem, it’s fine, but at night it’s a different story – it’s terrible”.
His petition says unlit roads are a major hazard to all using them at night. “The A249, Sittingbourne, is a perfect example of this problem,” it continues.
“Something needs to be done before more accidents happen.”
Mr Richardson, who lives in Sittingbourne, hopes to get 100,000 signatures so the matter is considered for debate in Parliament.
“We just need people to be aware,” he said. “I posted this petition on Facebook and the reception has been positive so far.”
Cllr Mike Whiting (Con), a former Kent county councillor and current vice chairman of the Swale Joint Transportation Board, said: “I agree the lines and the cats’ eyes are very worn and dim and could certainly use a refresh.
“It is of particular concern as we approach the worst of the winter with long, dark nights and poor visibility.
“I have previously written to Highways England bringing this to its attention and some work was done, but it is an ongoing challenge.”
Highways England is responsible for the road from Stockbury to the Isle of Sheppey, while the county council looks after the stretch from Stockbury to the M20.
A Highways England spokesman said: “It’s something we’re looking into and will announce more details in due course.”
