Get fit while you sit Don’t let an office job get in the way of a healthier life

Most people are guilty of thinking ‘this is the year I’m going to get fit and change my life’ each January.

Unfortunately, once the daily routine of taking the children to school and going to work, and everything else in between, sets in again, it’s easy for those fitness goals to fade away for another 12 months.

It’s also easy for this to mean you give up and let the daily grind swallow you whole, while you swallow a few more of those cakes that your workmate left on your desk.

But did you know there is another option?

If you’re willing to get some interesting looks from your colleagues that is.

A somewhat pricy but fun option is the Skandika SitFit elliptical trainer, which fits under your desk and gives you the option of pedalling the day away in style.

Fair warning, if you’re on a chair with wheels that doesn’t have an option to lock them, you may find you also get an arm workout as well from constantly having to pull yourself back towards your monitor.

This kit costs £99 on Amazon, and features a digital display that tells you how long you’ve been going, how many steps you’ve done and how many calories you’ve burned.

There are eight resistance lev- els to choose from, but going past level four was a push. That said, just 15 minutes on the easier setting of the machine burns an estimated 100 calories, so just think how many you’ll burn if you manage the higher levels.

It’s recommended that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, spread over five days, to keep them- selves fit and healthy.

Those wishing to lose weight but maintain their current diet are advised to exercise more frequently than that.

There are plenty of other exercises you can do at your desk, so make sure you don’t let your fitness goals slide.

The Skandika SitFit was supplied to the Kent Messenger by the company.
