We want to be able to see the stars

-

Assistant news editor Senior reporter Senior reporter I’ve read about Lee Richardson campaigning to install street lights along A249 at Detling Hill – ridiculous.

I also have astigmatism and wear glasses, and my night vision isn’t that brilliant, but I, and countless others use full beam when we can and drive slower. Yes, the road markings and cats eyes probably could be improved, but is there really a need to introduce even more light pollution into the Kent countryside, just because some people just don’t understand about night driving?

I spent many years driving between Hastings and London, and most of the A21 is unlit and a very curvy road, so driving in the dark was quite challenging, but not impossible.

The county does not need thousands of new street lights along country roads, using a ridiculous amount of electricity, and lighting up the night sky. We want to be able to see all the stars on a clear night, like you can in the Highlands, but we never will as long as street lights are polluting the night skies. Julia Moore Cumberland Avenue, Maidstone Senior reporter Senior reporter (January 6) regarding the gross underfunding of the NHS. We need to be clear, however, this underfunding is deliberate and a political choice by this government.

The Tory ideology is one of looking after the individual and not the collective. This is OK if you have the money to fund your own health as the rich and elite are able to do.

The whole idea of paying taxes fairly is that everyone benefits and not just the few. In today’s world of austerity (which is a political choice), people’s wages are declining and certainly not rising whilst the corporations and elite are getting away with paying little tax thus the rich are getting richer.

Governments claim there is Senior reporter Reporter not enough money in the pot for properly run public services such as health and social care. However, as we all know, there is always plenty of instant funds for unnecessary interventionist wars, costing billions.

We should not forget this government has made massive cuts to the NHS even though it claims to be giving millions each year to our health service. This so-called extra funding certainly does not come anywhere near to compensating the massive cuts.

It’s a ploy to make us, the public, think the government is supporting the NHS with extra funding. Janet Beale, via email
