Roadworks move me to cones rage

-

Senior reporter Senior reporter Re. recent letters and articles regarding roadworks in the Maidstone area…

Since Christmas there have been any number of roadworks in and around Maidstone. Notably on Staplehurst Road, Linton Hill, Bower Mount Road, London Road at Bower Mount Road and the A20 at both Lenham and Harrietsham.

Roadworks contractors seem to take far too much road space given the size and location of the hole to be dug. Often unnecessary traffic lights are put up, delays to journeys ensue and very little activity seems to take place.

It seems one group puts up lights, another digs the hole, a third group fixes the problem, a fourth group drags away waste, a fifth group refills the hole and a sixth group re-does the surface. All of this leads to delays. The permit system does not seem to have reduced the number of roadworks or the length of time we have to suffer them. Contractors should have to work on the hole they have dug 24/7 until works are complete. No delays or absence from Senior reporter Senior reporter site should be permissible. Works should preferably be done at night.

To the contractors, please spare us the health and safety excuses. They clearly have little regard to other road users. I would advise removal of Senior reporter Reporter cones but am told this is an offence. I would love to pull up and remove them and the traffic lights that go with them.
