Huge search on the coast

A huge search and rescue operation was launched after a man went missing as temperatur­es plunged to near freezing on Sunday night.

Police and coastguard teams were called at 9pm following a report a man in his 50s had disappeare­d in New Romney.

He was found more than two hours later by a coastguard search team on the beach at Greatstone and was suffering from mild hypothermi­a.

The search involved volunteers from the coastguard rescue teams based at Dungeness and Folkestone as well as British Transport Police. Five people were arrested after a man was found in a street with stab wounds.

Emergency services were called out to Mill Road in Gillingham at about 11.45am on Sunday where a 28-year-old man was found.

He had suffered cuts to his head and body which were believed to have been caused by a knife and was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for treatment.

His injuries were not lifethreat­ening and he has since been discharged.

It is understood the man, from London sustained his injuries in Victoria Street, near Gillingham station.

Police initially arrested four people, two men aged 24 and 28 and two women aged 18 and 19, from London.

The four London people have now been released on bail released on bail pending further inquiries until Tuesday, April 25.

Officers arrested another man on Monday, a 47-year-old from Gillingham, in connection with the incident. He has been bailed until Wednesday, March 22.

The road was re-opened shortly before 3.30pm.
