Broadbent’s goal spark

Maidstone are within three points of top spot in South Hockey Kent/ Sussex Regional 1 with a game in hand after cruising past Crawley 7- 0 last Saturday.

The away side started brightly but Joe Broadbent came off the bench after 10 minutes to break the deadlock and Maidstone never looked back, scoring another five times before half-time courtesy of coach Richard Turner, Waqas Dasitigir, James Christmas and a brace from an inspired man-of-thematch, Steve Marks.

In the second half Maidstone took their foot off the gas and only added a brave diving effort from Broadbent.

The 5ths remain unbeaten this year after a 6-1 win at Anchorians 4ths in Kent Open Division 3.

Simon Wood’s deflected shot gave them a 15th-minute lead and he made it 2- 0 soon after following good work from Dylan Collie. Barry Coffey added a third before Anchs pulled one back.

Maidstone hit three more goals after the break, however, with Wood netting two more to take his tally to four and man-ofthe-match Coffey getting his second.

Maidstone ladies suffered a 3-1 defeat at promotion-chasing Norwich Dragons in East League, Premier Division.

The visitors created some early chances but were unable to convert any and though Maidstone keeper Georgia Wishart kept the hosts out on the break with a series of saves, and Alex Penry cleared one off the line, Dragons broke the deadlock from the subsequent short corner.

Maidstone continued to press but were caught on the break for the Dragons’ second. After Norwich added a third the visitors did register a deserved goal through Hannah Durston, though they could not reduce the deficit further. The ladies’ 3rds went down 3- 0 at a physical Deal in Kent League Division 2. Although Maidstone started off the stronger, they were unable to capitalise on their opportunities and Deal scored against the run of play, and finished off a wellworked short corner at the start of the second half to make it two. The visitors conceded a third late on despite Rehannah Judge and player-of-the-match Kitty Worsfold being outstanding in defence. Kevin Kirkham and Clayton Pohio struck two apiece as Sutton Valence kept up the pace with a 4-1 win at New Beccehamians in Kent Open Premier A.

The 2nds overcame Gillingham Anchorians 2nds 3-1 in the same division thanks to goals from Andrew Lee, James Pascoe and Tom Willson.

Chris Sheldon’s double helped the 3rds keep pace at the top of Division 1 with a 2- 0 win at Maidstone 4ths, while the 4ths registered a good point from a 2-2 draw at home to Herne Bay 5ths, with goals from Chris Stille and Rob Cockayne.

The Vets drew 2-2 against Black Knights in the Surrey Vets Conference. Stuart Bates gave Valence the lead and 80-year-old Paul Linaker converted a penalty flick to put his side 2-1 ahead, only for the visitors to snatch a draw in the dying seconds.
