Bulls turn up the pressure in the seconD half to pull off a win against league leaDers

THANET AYLESFORD

-

Aylesford Bulls defeated London 3 South East leaders Thanet Wanderers in what was the game of the season for the visitors. Bulls hadn’t beaten old foes Thanet in four years and the hosts had convincingly won the reverse fixture. Despite a hard-fought first 40 minutes, the Bulls went into half-time trailing 19-5, with their only points scored by winger Tyler Babb following a well-worked backs move. In the second half, Bulls started to believe they could cause an upset. Babb, who found himself in space out wide, chipped through and gathered to cross for a second try in the corner. Minutes later fly-half Dion Comerford kicked the ball into space, with Sam Proctor gathering it over his head and touching down to make it 19-15. Then with minutes remaining Comerford intercepted a wayward pass and won the foot race to the line. He converted his own try to push Bulls 22-19 in front. The final moments of the game descended into chaos, with a lineout ball going loose and Thanet countering from deep. However after excellent defensive work Comerford was able to force a penalty, with the ball kicked dead to seal an impressive and unexpected victory. Captain Darren Jalink said: “It was without doubt the game of the season and I couldn’t be prouder of the boys.” Bulls are back in action on Saturday, March 4, when they welcome Folkestone to the Jack Williams Ground.
