Time to cash in on change of fortunes

- By Craig Tucker

Kevin Lokko believes it’s Maidstone’s time to pull clear of trouble as he bids to avoid back-to-back relegations.

Defender Lokko went down from the National League with Welling last season but thinks United are too good to go the same way.

They’re still in the bottom four, a point adrift of safety, but their performance in the 4-2 win over Chester has given everyone a lift.

Not that Lokko, who scored twice in the victory, has ever doubted their ability.

He said: “I said right from when we first dropped into the relegation zone that I’ve got every belief in our team.

“Compared to the team I had at Welling last year – no disrespect – I really see our team doing well. I’m very surprised we’re down there.

“Everyone’s time comes at some point in the season.

“You see Guiseley kicking on and it has to be our time now because with the players we’ve got, we’re too good to be down there.”

Lokko scored after two minutes and again just before half-time as Maidstone raced into a 4- 0 lead against Chester.

He said: “First half I couldn’t quite believe it – I don’t think we’ve played like that all season. Everything went right for us.

“Second half we’ve let in two poor goals – hardly any of the goals we’ve conceded this season have been outstanding – but we can’t be negative because we’ve won the game.

“I haven’t scored two goals in a game in my whole career.

“I don’t think I’ve even done that in training so I was over the moon.

“It felt a bit unnatural when I scored.

“I didn’t really know what to do – I just ran off, jumped in the air and pointed at the crowd.

“It’s massive because that’s two games now we haven’t lost.

“A point at York and beating a team like Chester, we can take loads of confidence and hopefully go on a run now.”
