Saunders: We must not get carried away

-

Manager Jay Saunders says Maidstone have achieved nothing yet. United are out of the National League relegation zone after a four-match unbeaten run, with Torquay taking their place. They have the chance to go nine points clear of drop rivals Southport when the teams meet at the Gallagher tomorrow (Saturday) but Saunders isn’t getting too excited. He said: “There’s a better feeling around and the boys have got a bit more confidence because we’re not losing games. But things can change quickly. “A few weeks back when we were losing games, it was all doom and gloom. “I said then, never too high, never too low and that’s important. I’ve said to the boys, ‘don’t get carried away, let’s move on to Southport and go from there’. “If we’d had this team earlier in the season, I don’t think we’d be where we are but we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing and we’ve got a chance. “If we can keep putting in performances like we have for the last three or four games and they keep giving me the workrate they’ve given me, then I genuinely think we’ll be OK. “But it’s no good getting that great result at Dagenham and then losing to Southport at home.” Alex Flisher completes a two-match suspension while Stuart Lewis serves a one-game ban following his dismissal in the 2-0 win at Dagenham on Tuesday. Bobby-Joe Taylor and Jake McCarthy are in contention to take Lewis’ place in midfield but Saunders felt the sending off – for two bookings – was harsh. He said: “I don’t know how he’s been booked for the first one. It’s literally a coming together, shoulder to shoulder. “He’s caught the lad a little bit late for the second one but the first one’s an embarrassment.”
