Passenger dies in another wrong-way crash on M20
Driver arrested after accident claims life of 32-year-old man
A man died after the car he was in crashed into another vehicle while travelling the wrong way down the M20.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing his passenger’s death.
Detectives now want to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dashcam footage of the smash.
Police, paramedics and firefighters were called at 3.35am on Saturday, but the victim, who was 32 and from London, died at the scene.
Officers say the grey Toyota Corolla was travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway when it collided with a black Volkswagen Touareg.
The Toyota driver, from Orpington, is being questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The motorway was shut London-bound between Junction 4 for West Malling, Rochester and Tonbridge and Junction 3 for Sevenoaks.
Police helped release vehicles caught in the long tail-backs and the road reopened just before 10am.
The arrested man has been bailed, pending further inquiries, until June 12.
It is not the first time there has been a fatality on the M20 involving a wrong-way driver.
In November last year, 60-yearold motorcyclist Michael Copleston was tragically killed on the same motorway after a crash involving a car, reportedly being driven on the wrong side by an elderly man. It happened near junction 9 for Ashford.
Months earlier, in June a driver was reported to have been travelling the wrong way along a sliproad at junction 11 near Hythe, but avoided a collision.
Earlier that year, in April, Krzysztof Stopko was arrested after driving the wrong way along the M20 at 80mph, after making a 50-hour trip from Poland with no food and little sleep. Two people were badly injured in the crash, just outside Hythe, and the 35-year-old driver was jailed for 32 months.
