Canoeists reach the rubbish others can’t

-

Around 20 canoes manned by members of the Maidstone Canoe Club took to the River Medway in Maidstone on Sunday as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

The canoeists collected 25 bags of rubbish from the water or from riverbanks where it would be difficult to reach from the shore.

The national scheme is organised by the Keep Britain Tidy Group.

Club secretary Geoff Orford said: “It was a good turn-out. Beside the usual crisp packets and drinks cans, we recovered a tricycle and an air guitar, which kept us amused for a while!”

The canoe club meets twice a week, on Sundays and on Wednesday evenings. Anyone interested in joining might like to take advantage of some introductory events coming up this summer. Visit www.maidstonecanoeclub.net for details.
