Martin double rekindles winning formula

Maidstone men’s 1sts were back on form with a 3-1 win over Sevenoaks 2nds in Kent/Sussex Regional 1 on Saturday. The hosts – beaten 7-2 at Folkestone last week, their third defeat in four games – missed early chances before taking the lead when playerof-the-match Joe Martin rounded the keeper and slotted home. It was 2-0 soon after, Martin turning provider for Rich Turner but Sevenoaks hit back before half-time with a reverse-stick strike. Ill-discipline hampered Maidstone’s second half, making the game closer than it should have been but a second for Martin, following a superb bit of skill to baffle the defence, clinched victory. A late goal denied Maidstone ladies’ 1sts victory against Old Loughtonians in the East League, Premier Division. Maidstone started well, applying pressure, while tireless work in midfield from player-ofthe-match Annabel Rowe and Catherine Broadbent led to several chances. They finally took the lead towards the end of the first half, excellent hockey setting up Jess Cremin inside the circle. The second half was more even, with chances at both ends but Maidstone couldn’t make the most of their short corners. They stayed strong at the other end before conceding from a late short corner. Maidstone ladies’ 2nds enjoyed back-to-back wins last weekend. The Kent Division 1 leaders survived heavy first-half pressure to beat Sevenoaks 3-0 on Saturday, taking the lead just before the break through Lou Cassey. Jen Duggan made it two and with the game opening up, swift passing set up Claire Daniels, whose deft finish completed victory. They followed up with a 6-0 win over Ashford on Sunday. Price opened the scoring, then an unmarked Daniels set up Jackson on the post. Good running from the girls led to further goals for Daniels and Price before the break. Second-half pressure saw Bush finish a short corner before Price completed her hat-trick. The ladies’ 3rds are in trouble near the foot of Kent Division 2 after a 4-1 defeat at Kings Alleyns. Player-of-the-match Joey Hernon made some fine saves, while youngster Kitty Worsfold linked well with Julie Davies to earn a penalty corner which was put away by Maddy Coffey. Maidstone ladies’ 4ths dominated a feisty game against Meopham, winning 2-0 in Kent Division 5. Captain Kay Bowley spent time in the sin-bin – an unwanted card on her birthday – but joint players-ofthe-match put Maidstone ahead when Nicky Bourne finished the loose ball after Bridgette Allen’s run. Bourne scored again in the second half, finishing a short corner and was only denied a hat-trick by a post. Lou Cassey made some good saves in the Maidstone goal.
