Bears capitalise against leaders

Southern Counites East

-

Bearsted completed the double over leaders Ashford, who finished Saturday’s game with nine men.

Keeper George Kamurasi was the first player sent off after handling outside his box 10 minutes from the break, with striker Shaun Welford taking the gloves.

The Nuts and Bolts, top of the South Counties East League, Premier Division on goal difference, then lost captain Stuart West to a second yellow card on 82 minutes.

Bearsted pushed for the winner and it came on 85 minutes when Andy Irvine met Williams’ cross in front of a crowd of 220 – the highest at Honey Lane this season.

Bearsted started well, enjoyed plenty of the ball in the first half and worked hard to close down Ashford.

United grew into it, with Welford denied by a superb block from Bears skipper Rob Lyall.

Lyall was at it again after the break, somehow diverting the ball on to the post after Scott Andrews got a hand to Jason Goodchild’s shot.

It started to look as though it might not be Ashford’s day, summed up by the dismissal of Kamurasi, whose momentum took him outside the area as Williams won a race to the ball and toed it against his arm.

Bearsted were unable to follow up their win over Ashford, losing 2- 0 at Corinthian on Tuesday night.

Kevin Stevens’ side, who are 14th, go to Croydon on Saturday. Bearsted: S Andrews, Flisher, Foster, Lyall, Hart, Holliday ( Wells), G Andrews, Garner, Irvine, Collins ( Mooney), Williams ( Carcary). Subs not used: Hughes, Donnelly. Attendance: 220.

K Sports won’t give up on promotion in Division 1 despite dropping more points.

They drew 1-1 at Elmstead on Saturday, with Josh Brown’s early goal cancelled out in the last 15 minutes.

It followed a 2-2 draw at Forest Hill last Wednesday, Caine Smith and Nick Nowotny the scorers.

Kris Browning’s side remain third, two points behind Saturday’s opponents Glebe, having played four more games. It’s a key away match if Sports are to finish in the top two.

Boss Browning said: “The way the lads have battled, I could never say it’s over because they work their socks off. They were devastated on Saturday but we still have hope and won’t give up until it’s mathematically impossible. There’s still loads to play for.”

Reece Gillies scored the only goal as Snodland Town won 1- 0 at Crockenhill.

Snodland are without a game this weekend.
