Calls to rename junction in memory of popular DJ

Fans are calling for a motorway roundabout to be renamed Dave Cash Corner, in memory of the much-loved DJ who lived nearby.

The online petition, set up by former BBC traffic news broadcaster Anne Bond, has so far received hundreds of signatures asking for the junction 8 intersection at Hollingbourne to be retitled in his honour.

Mr Cash, who was 74 when he died suddenly from a heart attack in October, became one of the country’s first pirate radio DJs after setting sail with offshore Radio London in 1964.

More recently he had presented vintage music programmes on BBC Radio Kent and lived with wife Sara in Ashford Road, in Hollingbourne, not far from the Parkgate Inn.

Ms Bond, from London, says the DJ’s loyal listeners feel renaming the roundabout would be a fitting tribute to the “national treasure”.

She said: “Dave used this roundabout on a daily basis, whether it be on his journey to BBC Kent or heading in and out of Maidstone. Dave would always ask his travel reporter towards the end of his programme, whether the route to Junction 8 was clear as his home was approximately a mile from the junction. He would often be spotted at the roundabout driving his branded 4x4.

“Dave laid down a sound track for millions of peoples lives in his career spanning over 50 years. He is sorely missed. We feel to rename this roundabout would be one of the many ways we can remember Dave Cash for years to come.”

The petition will be handed to Maidstone and the Weald MP Helen Grant, although it has been pointed out the roundabout actually falls within the constitu- ency of Helen Whately, MP for Faversham and Mid Kent.
