Man jailed for baby attack

-

A 25- year- old man has been jailed for 10 years for assaulting a baby girl, leaving her with multiple fractures.

Victor Awadzi left the months-old child with injuries so severe police said investigating officers said she was lucky to survive.

Suspicion was aroused when hospital staff could find no underlying medical condition to account for multiple fractures discovered when the infant was admitted for an unrelated matter.

Awadzi, from Sheppey, admitted two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and a further charge of cruelty to a child.

He had previously claimed the fractures were caused when he accidentally dropped the baby, but this account was dismissed by medical experts who said injuries to the child’s ribs, thigh and arm would have been the result of at least four separate applications of force.

Awadzi, who will have to serve two thirds of his 10 years before he will be considered for parole, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court and must also spend an additional five years on extended licence.

DC John Milham said: “Although he admitted guilt at court, Awadzi has never given a credible explanation as to how the injuries were caused.

“My thoughts go out to the victim and her family and I wish them well for the future.”
