Boxing show is back in big way

-

Snodland ABC are hosting the town’s first major boxing show in almost 60 years. It’s set to feature 20 bouts and takes place at the Community Centre in Paddlesworth Road on Saturday, April 8. The club have held shows out of town – the last one at Larkfield Leisure Centre in 1999 – but this will be the first in Snodland since 1958. Trainer Mark West said: “It’s amazing to think it’s been so long since there was a show in Snodland. “It’s something that’s been in the making since we moved into our new premises back in 2007. “We’ve just not had a squad big enough to do it but now we’ll have five or six of our own lads on the bill. It’ll be good for the area. “The community centre holds 200 people and I’d imagine it’ll be full, especially with the show being on a Saturday. “Hopefully, there will be more to come after this. We’d like to have a couple of shows a year.” West and fellow trainers Dave Phillips, Mark Burren and Dean Ianson have organised the show, which will feature other clubs from Kent and a couple from London. Snodland boxers have been warming up for their big night. Ben Wheeler, 11, reached the semi-finals of the London Alliance Championships, with Sonny Harding, also 11, bowing out in the quarter-finals. Ben Bishop, 13, won his debut fight on the Strood show, while Brooklyn Tilley, 16, won a split decision at Bromley and Downham. All four will be in action next weekend, along with Jack Burren, 17, who’s back with Snodland after a season away. Tickets are available on the door, priced £12 adults and £6 juniors. Doors open at 6pm. The club would like to hear from any potential sponsors. Call Dave on 01634 865779.
