The dangers of swimming near the weir
Children and families are to be warned of the dangers of swimming in a village weir following a spate of incidents.
The area close to Teapot Island and The Lees in Yalding attracts many visitors in the summer and families often paddle in the shallow river between the sluice gates and the bridge.
But Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) says several people have needed rescuing after ignoring the “Danger”, “Keep out” and “No swimming” signs.
The Environment Agency has recently installed a security gate by the weir pool and fitted extra rails to fill in gaps in the fencing.
Yalding Parish Council is also putting up fences and signs at the slipway on the Lees car park.
Rob Groombridge of KFRS said: “Please make sure you and your family stay safe by keeping out of the water and the weir pool.”
