Dad finishes 9,500-mile challenge

-

An East Malling dad has accomplished his goal – to run a marathon a day for a year.

Ben Rogers completed run number 365 on Sunday, the anniversary of when his challenge started at the 2016 London Marathon.

He ran the final course, a circular route ending at the Malta Inn at Allington Lock, supported by around 40 family and friends.

After reaching the finish line of the 9,500-mile challenge, the 46-year-old of Whiffen Walk said: “They have been with me throughout and it was nice to have them there at the end.

“I had a pint of cider to celebrate and am taking the week off running. I think my wife, Linda, is the one whose finding the transition the hardest. She’s getting used to me being in bed at 4am for the first time in a year.

“The best thing is looking back and thinking what an accomplishment it was. There were certainly times near the beginning when it felt impossible.”

The father-of-two did the marathons in memory of his stepfather, Doug Chaffer, and has so far raised nearly £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Pilgrims Hospice. To donate, visit tinyurl. com/365marathon
