Fridge mountain hits a new low
Another part of Kent was left dealing with one of its worst cases of fly-tipping last week when more than 100 fridges and freezers were found strewn across public land.
Canterbury City Council said taxpayers would be left to pick up the cleaning bill after discovering the white goods dumped beside the river off Sturry Road.
Council spokesman Rob Davies said: “It’s disgraceful to see the amount of fly-tipping on this land, particularly the type of material that has been dumped and the potential environmental damage being caused.”
“The cost of this work is yet to be established but it will be taxpayers’ money we’ll be spending unnecessarily as a direct result of the actions of these flytippers.”
The council bought the land along the River Stour as part of a strategy to create a riverside route from the city centre.
And in Ashford, fly-tipping has become so problematic at a beauty spot that councillors are considering closing it off.
Members are due to discuss fencing off an area of Chilham to restrict access overnight to stop the area being blighted by rubbish.
