News from around the county Crews battle blaze through the night

-

An investigation is under way after a huge fire broke out in the centre of Faversham.

Fire crews last Wednesday worked throughout the night tackling the blaze and then damping down before leaving the scene in Preston Street as attempts to establish what caused the fire began.

The blaze broke out just before 9pm in a row of shops, including a furniture store.

Six fire engines and a height vehicle, as well as police and paramedics, were called but no one was injured.

The drama unfolded in the centre of the town with many historic buildings nearby.

Neighbouring properties were evacuated as thick black smoke filled the air, though people were allowed to return in the early hours.

The fire was brought under control at about 11pm but crews stayed on site until 8am the next morning.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said crews remained at the scene damping down remaining hotspots and checking roof voids to ensure the fire did not spread to a range of adjoining flats.

The shops affected are Faversham Furnishing, the former Mackay & Co solicitors building and the Empire menswear shop.

The cause is not yet known.
