A teenage drug dealer who was caught smoking cannabis in a car in Tovil, has been locked up for more than four years. Veterinary nurse student Bobby Deards, 19, had continued to deal after a stash and equipment were seized from his home.

The cocaine addict who had a previous conviction for dealing class A drugs, was first arrested last year at a house where he was living with his girlfriend. He was granted bail.

A judge said courts tried to find a constructive way to deal with such offenders, but admitted: “There is nothing I can do for him.” Maidstone Crown Court heard Deards, now of Hunsdon Close, Eastchurch, was in the second year of a course in Medway. But on January 1 last year officers raided the house in Rainham and found 74g of cocaine on the microwave. Another 4g was in a fridge-freezer. Prosecutor Trevor Wright said on October 25 officers came across a BMW, owned by Deards’ father, in Brenchley Road, Tovil. “The vehicle smelled strongly of cannabis,” said Mr Wright.

Deards had two mobile phones and £240 in cash was hidden in his underwear. A search of his home revealed 28g of cocaine, about £4,000 cash and drugs gear. He admitted two offences of possessing drugs with intent to supply and possessing a noxious substance.

Deards, who had convictions as a juvenile for possessing cannabis and cocaine with intent to supply and having an offensive weapon, for which he was given referral orders, was sentenced to four years and eight months youth custody.
