Superb spring displays

Visitors to Leeds Castle and Hollingbou­rne Garden Society’s spring show were treated to an impressive display of blooms at the village hall in Eyhorne Street. There were around 70 entries in the floral classes and more in the cookery and crafts sections. Committee member Jean Talboys said: “The daffodils were over in most people’s gardens but we still had some lovely examples, as well as perennials and shrubs.” In addition there were biscuits, cakes and loaves of bread to admire. The society holds three shows a year, which are always well-attended. Mencap at Cobtree Hall, Mote Park is holding a plants, cakes and books sale on Saturday, May 13 at 2.30pm. Entrance for children is free. Annual plant sale: St Marys Thurnham is holding a plant sale on Bearsted Green on Saturday, May 13 from 8.30am until midafterno­on. Many varieties at great prices. Cricket club: On Saturday in the league, the First XI are away at Meopham and the Second XI are at home against Withyham. On Sunday the first match of the season for the Sunday XI takes place, a home friendly fixture versus Chestfield at 2pm. from local churches in the Holy Trinity South Chatham Parish covering all areas in Blue Bell Hill, Lordswood and Walderslad­e will be holding house-to-house collection­s during the week May 14-20. For 60 years funds have been raised for those most in need, providing essential food and shelter. There is an opportunit­y to contribute at the Parish Coffee Morning held at St Alban’s on Wednesday, May 17 from 10-11.30am. Refreshmen­ts, home made cakes and a chance to chat. Fancy a Flutter: A family walk to hear the evening chorus of birds before they roost and bats before they rise to feed on the wing takes place from 7-9pm on Friday, May 12 in Weavering Community Orchard, Grove Green (next to Tesco’s).
