Kent Messenger Maidstone

In public use

The unisex public toilet in the Broadway Shopping Centre is also adapted for disabled users. The centre is one of 14 places which take part in Maidstone Borough Council’s community toilet scheme.

Designated loos are made available to the public at various locations, including cafes, bars and shops, in exchange for a £600 fee to help with cleaning bills.

A spokesman for JLL, the property manager of the Broadway Shopping Centre, said: “The matter has been reported to the local police and we are helping them with their inquires.”

In April 2014 a voyeur, who used a company credit card to buy a covert camera and spy on female colleagues in a toilet, was jailed for 10 months.

Jonathon Canavon, from Grays, Essex, had also bought a camera similar to the one found at the Broadway centre but it was never discovered by police. The 32-year-old supervisor had installed a separate device, disguised as an air freshener, in the women’s cubicle at the BP oil refinery on the Isle of Grain.
